Thinning roots, fried strands, and dandruff. The battle for healthy hair is never-ending, isn’t it? What if I told you that essential oils can help with all this? In this Simply Earth May 2023 Box review, we’ll look at the best essential oils for healthier hair and creative (and fun) ways to use them.
I love using essential oils for hair care. After this post, I hope you will too!
The postpartum hair loss I experienced after my second daughter’s birth was unreal. It felt like every shower I pulled out clumps. A friend recommended rosemary essential oil. I thought, “What have I got to lose?”
Other than more hair, of course.
That friend was pretty much a genius. Essential oils have been used for centuries to aid women just like you and me. Better yet, they aren’t anecdotal remedies. Recent scientific studies has shown the promise of these homeopathic products in hair care.
In this post, we’re going to discuss the benefits of using essential oils in your hair and tips on how to use them effectively.
As always, my favorite oil company ever, Simply Earth, is here to help with that. We are going to unpack the Simply Earth May 2023 Recipe Box and take a good look at the oils and recipes included. All of them are powerhouses for hair care.
I can’t wait to make some recipes with you!

How Essential Oils Can Help Your Hair Grow Thicker, Stronger, and Longer
First of all, let’s talk about why using essential oils is good for your hair. Essential oils…
Promote Hair Growth
If you’re struggling with broken ends, dandruff, or thinning hair, take a good, hard look at your scalp. That could very well be the cause of your troubles. A few choice essential oils can increase the circulation on your scalp.
What’s that mean?
More blood flow equates to more nutrients and oxygen. A very important ingredient to hair growth.
When your scalp’s ph level is imbalanced, your hair takes a huge hit. Sometimes it looks stringy and oily. Other times, it goes in the opposite direction: dandruff.
If you’re suffering from dandruff, essential oils could be exactly what your scalp needs. Not only do they balance your ph level, but they also relieve inflammation and and hydrate your scalp.
If your hair just isn’t what it should be, you should focus on encouraging new, healthy growth. That means eating healthy, getting plenty of rest, taking your vitamins, and nourishing the skin on your noggin’.
Did you know that many oils are packed with nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants? Especially those included in the Simply Earth May 2023 box (don’t worry, we’ll get to those in a minute).
Reduces Hair Breakage
Split ends are the worst. When your strands are malnourished and dry, the end result is broken and split ends. Some oils can actually improve the elasticity of your hair, reducing breakage.
Below, we’re going to make some heat protector spray and hair masks that will protect you from further damage.
About Simply Earth
Before we get started, let me tell you about the products I will be referring to in this post. Simply Earth is an essential oil manufacturer based out of Wisconsin. They sell 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils for wholesale prices.
I love them, and I will not use anyone else.
Aside from the fact that they’re just a good company, I can’t imagine why I would ever pay more from “one of the big retailers” when I can get the same quality of products at Simply Earth. For a dramatically lower price.
Simply Earth sells oils and accessories individually, but its best product is the monthly recipe box.
Every box contains:
- 4 essential oils
- 6 recipes
- 2-3 bonus goodies
- Lots of love
All for $45 a month. It’s hard to even buy one essential oil at that price, let alone 4 and some other goodies.

Essential Oils for Your Hair
Let’s move on to the best essential oils for hair growth and hair care. Some of these oils, I’m sure you’ll recognize immediately, while others might be a little unfamiliar.
Everyone knows that rosemary helps with hair growth.
Remember the benefits of using essential oils in your hair we talked about above?
Rosemary can do all that. It decreases dandruff, increases circulation, strengthens your strands, and stimulates your hair follicles (in theory this increases the thickness of your hair).
Studies have also shown that rosemary can also assist with protection against skin-cancer, memory improvement, and stress relief.
Basil is a pretty popular oil for cooking, but not a ton of people have used it as an essential oil. It’s mostly used for topical treatments and works great for hair follicle growth and stimulation.
Overall, it’s a really good oil to have in your cabinet, as it can also be used to treat wounds and reduce migraine pain.
Side note? I love the scent. It’s sweet, slightly woods-y, and very relaxing.
If you’ve read my blog before, you’ve seen me talk about the extensive benefits of patchouli oil. However, I don’t think we’ve chatted about what it can do for your hair.
Patchouli is great for keeping your scalp clean and healthy. It contains antifungal and antibacterial properties that help reduce the presence of dandruff-causing microbes. It’s also great for keeping your strands hydrated.
BO Be Gone
Simply Earth includes a blend in every monthly box. Can we give them an applause for their creativity on this one? I love it!
BO Be Gone is a combination of lavender, orange, patchouli, ylang ylang, and sandalwood. All of these oils are known for their anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that eliminate odor-causing bacteria. However, I’m particularly excited about the dash of orange. Orange essential oil contains antioxidants that are fantastic for hair follicle growth and UV-protection.
Sunflower Seed Oil
Like coconut oil, sunflower seed oil is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Specifically, we’re getting a big dose of Vitamin E. This is a great carrier oil for hydration if you’re suffering from dandruff or fried strands.
I had zero clue what this was before Simply Earth sent it out in this month’s box. Basically, it’s a natural alcohol that stabilizes products containing a mixture of oil and water.
Now, emulsifying wax, I was a little more familiar with (via previous boxes). Emulsifying wax gives your products a smooth consistency and holds them together. It also moisturizes your hair!
When you use essential oils for hair care, you will typically do it in one of three ways:
- Massage it Directly Onto Your Scalp: After diluting your oil of choice, you can massage it onto your scalp to hydrate and nourish your roots, increase circulation, and stimulate hair follicle growth. This is what you’ll want to do if you want to promote stronger, thicker hair in the future or rid yourself of dandruff.
- Spray It On: Coat your strands with essential oil products to help protect them against heat or UV damage.
- Make a Hair Mask: Broken, split-ends? For a more intensive treatment, create an ultra-nourishing hair mask. A balm or mask will usually be comprised of thicker solids, like coconut oil or beeswax.
In this post, we’re going to explore all of these methods with the recipes Simply Earth included. Here’s all of the recipes included in the Simply Earth May Box:
- Simple Scalp Scrub
- Silky Soft Hair Mask
- Restorative Hair Balm
- Green Pastures Roll-On
- Flower Crown Diffuser Blend
- Sunflower Heat Protector Spray
Recipe Tutorials: How to Use Essential Oils for Hair Care
Restorative Hair Balm
- 3 Tbsp coconut oil (solid–this comes in the Big Bonus Box you receive from Simply Earth when you subscribe).
- 1 Tbsp sunflower seed oil
- ¼ cetyl alcohol
- 1 tsp emulsifying wax
- ¼ tsp beeswax
Above we talked about using essential oils to strengthen and hydrate the strands of your hair to prevent breakage. Let’s do that now with some restorative hair balm.
Add the coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, cetyl alcohol, emulsifying wax, and beeswax together in a bowl. Melt using either a double-boiler or microwave. I microwaved it in15 second increments. When the beeswax is the only solid left, you’re almost done. I would put it in for one more round.
After it cools slightly, add your essential oils. Pour the mixture in a jar and allow it to cool to solid.
To use this balm effectively, you’ll want to rub it on the ends of your hair, not the roots.
Simply Scalp Scrub
- 1 Drop Rosemary
- 1 Drop Patchouli
- 3 Drops BO Be Gone Blend
- 1 TBSP Shampoo
- 1 Tsp sugar (Alternatively, you could use salt. I’m a sugar girl all the way!)
This is a pretty complicated recipe, so pay attention. Are you ready?
Mix the essential oils and shampoo together in a small bowl. Add sugar. Done! 😉
Using the scalp scrub is just as easy as making it. Simply massage it into your scalp and scrub. I like to get a little fingernail action in and use a circular massage pattern to (hopefully) increase circulation. Follow up with a good shampoo and your favorite conditioner.
Sunflower Protector Spray
- ½ Tbsp sunflower seed oil
- 2 drops rosemary
- 1 oz spray bottle (I used one I had received in a past box. However, Walmart sells these bottles in the travel section of the Beauty department).
- 1.5 Tbsp distilled water
This is such an easy recipe to create. Add the oils to the spray bottle and shake. Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Done!
Simple, but oh, so effective.
According to Simply Earth, you’ll want to spray it on damp hair. Dry your hair dry before using an iron, though, and be sure not to use any heat higher than 425.
