Winter does a number to my skin. Cold winds and chilly nights always dry it out. Then, when I try to apply moisturizing products, the chemicals only irritate my skin further. I’ve had the best luck combatting this seasonal ailment with gentle, natural products.
While all-natural essential oil lotions are great for your skin, they can be so expensive. The solution? DIYing it! With a little creativity, patience, and high-quality ingredients, you can create products that nourish your skin without breaking your wallet.
The Simply Earth January 2023 box has everything you need to take your skincare routine to the next level! In this post, we’re going to make a few lotions and balms together, and unpack exactly what’s included in the box.

In this post, we’re using oils and recipe’s from Simply Earth’s January 2023 recipe box.
In case you don’t know, Simply Earth is a family-owned essential oil manufacturer based in Wisconsin. I love buying from this company because they offer 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils for a price that is significantly lower than competitors. All of their ingredients are ethically-farmed from international farmers and their oils are distilled in the United States.
My favorite part of Simply Earth? They donate 13% of their profits to non-profits!
A while back, Simply Earth created a new way to save lots of money on essential oils: the monthly essential oil recipe box.
Every box is filled with:
- 4 essential oils
- 6 recipes
- 2-3 bonus goodies
Plus, you get a free bonus box containing all the carrier oils, roll-on bottles, storage bottles, and waxes you need to make your oil concoctions.
Simply Earth’s ultimate goal is to help their customers live a toxin-free lifestyle. So, each box revolves around a new theme to help their customers do just that. This month’s theme is lotions and balms.
What’s Included in the Simply Earth January 2023 Box
Essential Oils
Peace & Quiet Blend
Let’s start with the best first, shall we?
The Peace and Quiet blend is the perfect combination of floral and citrus. It’s a mix of Orange, Cedarwood, Lime & Frankincense. These oils are also perfect for this month’s theme, lotions and balms. Cedarwood and Frankincense can help improve skin conditions like eczema or scarring, orange is loaded with skin-protecting antioxidants, and lime knocks out unsavory bacteria.
Lavender 40/42
First of all, what’s the deal with lavender 40/42? What does that even mean? Is it pure?
The short answer is, yes. Lavender 40/42 is pure lavender. In this case, the lavender oil was blended specifically to produce a consistency of 40% linalool and 42% linalyl acetate. This type of method produces a consistent product and aroma.
Lavender is lovely for skincare remedies, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It can tighten your skin while improving your mood. Double-win!
Sweet Dreams
This month, Simply Earth is sending us TWO blends. How exciting!
If you’re a mom, I think you’re really going to like this one. The Sweet Dreams is made up of kid-friendly essential oils that can help your little one relax and snooze the night away. It’s a combination of: Lavender, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Marjoram, and Chamomile.
It’s also perfect for making skincare remedies and ointments. We already talked about the benefits of cedarwood and frankincense. Marjoram and chamomile may reduce the signs of aging by hydrating and protecting the skin from free radicals.
Oregano
It’s not just a tasty herb to add to your Italian dishes! Oregano is actually a very well-rounded essential oil that is great for colds, skincare, and homemade cleaning products. It’s jam-packed with superpower nutrients like vitamin A, C, and E. It also contains antioxidants to protect your skin from free-radicals.
Bonuses
I am loving the bonuses included in this month’s box! You may not be familiar with all of these products, though, so let’s unpack them together.
- Vegetable Glycerin – Made from the fat of vegetables, vegetable glycerin hydrates your cells and softens your skin.
- Emulsifying Wax – If you’re scratching your head on this one, don’t feel bad! Before receiving the box, I had never used emulsifying wax and I had zero clue what it did. Emulsifying wax is a natural binding agent used to blend balms, lotions, and creams. Basically, it will help your lotions stay creamy longer and hold your soaps together better.
- Soap Mold – Used for (you guessed it!) making DIY essential oil bars.

Recipe Tutorials for the Simply Earth January 2023 Recipe Box
Fresh and Floral Body Milk
Ingredients Needed
- ¼ cup distilled water
- ¼ tsp vegetable glycerin
- 1 Tbsp almond oil
- ¼ tsp emulsifying wax
- 1 drop Oregano Essential Oil
- 6 drops Peace & Quiet Essential Oil
- 6 drops Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
- Hand Mixer
- 8 drops Geogard ECT Preservative (optional, I didn’t use this)
- 4 oz sealable container or spray
Is the freezing weather drying out your skin too? This body milk is designed to protect, hydrate, and nourish your skin.
Now, this recipe looks complicated, but I promise it’s not. You do need to be a little precise though.
First, mix the distilled water and glycerin in a bowl. Heat with either a double-boiler or microwave the mixture in short increments until it reaches 150 degrees.
Mix the almond oil and emulsifying wax in a separate bowl and do the same. Both mixtures must be at 150 degrees. Mix the almond oil mixture with the water mixture. Mix thoroughly for about 2 minutes. Add the essential oils and mix for another 30 seconds.
Allow the mixture to cool before pouring into a sealable container.
Peace Roll-On
Ingredients Needed
- 10 ml Roll-On Container (free with your bonus box)
- 10ml Fractionated Coconut Oil
- 3 drops Peace and Quiet Blend
- 2 drops Lavender 40/42
- 1 drop Sweet Dreams
Let’s take a break and make something simple, shall we? At first, I was a little nervous about mixing two blends (three if you count the Lavender 40/42 as a blend!), but it smells divine and instantly puts you in a better mood.
To make this recipe, simply add the essential oils to one of the roll-on containers included in your free bonus box (you got that, right? Use the code BABYLANDFREE to snag your bonus box for free and receive a free $40 e-gift card too!). Fill the rest of the bottle with the fractionated coconut oil. I like to fill it to the beginning of the bottle’s neck. Replace the cap and give it a good swirl.
Apply the blend to your pulse points and think happy thoughts!
Clarifying Honey Solid Lotion Bar
Ingredients Needed
- 2 Tbsp coconuts oil (solid)
- 1 Tbsp beeswax
- 1 Tbsp almond oil
- 2 tsp emulsifying wax
- 15 drops Peace & Quiet Essential Oil Blend
- 3 drops Oregano Essential Oil
- Soap mold
- Handmixer
- Food thermometer
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 tsp water
This clarifying soap bar will gently exfoliate and cleanse your skin while blasting away bacteria and other harmful microbes. Like the body milk, it’s super simple to make, but we need to make sure that the temperature is right.
Mix the coconut oil, beeswax, almond oil, and emulsifying wax together. Using a double-boiler or microwaving in short increments, melt the mixture. Be sure you raise the temperature to 150 degrees.
Stir in the essential oils.
Mix the honey and water together in a separate bowl. Raise the temperature to 150 degrees. Add the honey/water mixture to the oil mixture. Stir until it’s completely mixed, for about 3 minutes.
Pour the mixture into the soap mold. Let the bar dry completely. (Feel free to make a sandwich or something. My mold took at least an hour to completely solidify.) Once your soap solidifies, gently remove it from the mold.
Voila!
