Mama Natural Baby Care Course Review {2021}

Sharing is caring!

The first couple days with my daughter were a dream. My L&D nurses were incredible. If I had an issue with breastfeeding, they helped. My daughter made a weird noise that freaked me out? They reassured me. I’m a little embarrassed to admit this, but they actually helped me bathe her for the first time. So, when they all but pushed me through the doors and bid me farewell, I was a little shell-shocked.

What? That’s it?

The full impact of my new responsibility hit me. I was pretty sure I could count the number of diapers I’d changed on one hand. Suddenly, I realized that my husband and I were the least qualified people to care for another human being.

If you’re feeling just a little overwhelmed by the thought of caring for a tiny human, trust me, you’re not alone. Caring for a newborn is a tough job, whether you’re a proud new parent or a mom of 6.

The Mama Natural Baby Care Course sets itself apart from other newborn care classes. Not only will it teach you the basics of how to care for your baby, but it provides natural, non-toxic, holistic solutions that are darn hard to find anywhere else. So, not only will you feel more confident and equipped after taking this class, but your knowledge-base of natural, scientifically-backed remedies will be complete.

Hands down, that this is the best baby care class I’ve taken. I also took the Mama Natural Birth Course and really, really liked that. I LOVED this course and would recommend it to anybody. Having said that, my goal is to help you decide if this is the right newborn care course for you.

So, let’s dig in!

What is the Mama Natural Baby Care Course?

Mama Natural Baby Care - Genevieve

If you’re reading this, you probably already know who Mama Natural is, but let’s start there.

Genevieve Howland (AKA Mama Natural) is one of the most popular natural parenting advisors on the internet. She started Mama Natural as a resource for other holistic moms that wanted to provide a healthier living style for their families.

Her website isn’t just a mom blog. She has actively partnered with pediatricians, RNs, IBCLCs, and doulas to provide the best, most accurate information for moms. Before I even became a mom blogger, I visited her website for trustworthy natural baby care remedies.

You might already be familiar with her premium natural birthing class, The Mama Natural Birth Course. If you’re pregnant and want to have an medicated (epidural-free) childbirth, definitely check out my review on it!

Most recently, Genevieve launched the Mama Natural Baby Care Course. The course was created by Genevieve, Maura Winkler (IBCLC and Doula), Elisa Song (Board Certified Pediatrician), and Firefighter Tim. It’s a culmination of baby care basics and many of the natural remedies Genevieve first introduced on her website.

Class Structure

The Mama Natural Baby Care Course is entirely video-based.

Each video (thankfully) has time markers so you can hop around to the topic you’d like to learn more about. Having said that, I would make sure to watch the video all the way through the first round.

The actual structure of the lessons varies depending on the topic, but mostly it lecture-style. Having said that, the visual aids and tutorials ensured that I was never bored.

Content

This course is MASSIVE. It’s probably the best resource I’ve been able to find for newborn care.

As I’m writing this review, I’m actually 7 months pregnant with my second child. I legitimately felt like I needed to take notes.

In each lesson, a specific topic is presented at the most basic level. Then, the instructor (either Genevieve, Maura, or Elisa) goes on to relate it to a natural, holistic lifestyle. So, when you read through the topics that are included in the course, keep that in mind. All of these topics are presented from a natural standpoint.

Topics Included in the Mama Natural Baby Care Course

  • Baby Eat – Breastfeeding basics and tutorials, breastfeeding troubleshooting, and how to supplement with formula.
  • Baby Sleep. Tips to get baby to sleep faster and protect against SIDS.
  • Baby Poop. What’s normal, what’s not, diapering remedies and natural products, cloth and disposable diapering tutorial.
  • Baby Cry. How to soothe a crying baby, special circumstances like colic and baby hating car.
  • Baby Play. How to play with baby, including safety.
  • Baby Grow. Milestones and weight gain.
  • Baby Care. Grooming, baths, what to do when baby is sick, giving baby a massage, and common baby ailments.
  • Baby Safety. Infant CPR and car seat safety.
  • Baby Gear. Really cool section because Genevieve gets into her own experiences with baby gear.
  • Mama Love – Postpartum mental and physical wellness, what to expect.
  • New Family Dynamics – Dealing with common adjustments after having a new baby. Helping siblings cope, changes in marriage, money, pets, schedules

Best Highlights of the Mama Natural Baby Care Course

Mama Natural Baby Care Course - Maura Winkler Breastfeeding Tutorial
Fantastic breastfeeding tutorial

This is the part of my review where I go over my favorite aspects of the course. I genuinely had a difficult time choosing which parts of the course to elaborate on (yes, it was that good!)

But, if you’re a natural-minded, new mom, I think these lessons will intrigue you the most. 🙂

Baby Eat

As the first lesson in the course, Mama Natural definitely puts her best foot forward. Their breastfeeding tutorial is the best that I’ve ever seen. Aside from an in-person course guided by an IBCLC, I don’t think you’ll be able to find a better one.

The class teaches you how to breastfeed from start to finish: how to latch, breastfeeding positions (including which breastfeeding positions might be best for your body type), how to increase your milk and more. The class instructor, Maura, also teaches you what you can expect to go wrong and how to fix it

On a side note, I love how they explain why breast is best without coming off too strong or judge-y. They tell you the physiological benefits of breastfeeding (many of which I didn’t even know), but also explain how you can supplement with formula if necessary.

If you’re one of my regular readers, you might remember that I usually recommend the Ultimate Breastfeeding Class by Milkology.

I still love that course and think it’s a fantastic, budget-friendly resource for new moms. Having said that, I feel that you can confidently skip it if you buy the Mama Natural Baby Care Course. They cover much of the same content and I feel that the tutorials in the Mama Natural class were actually more in-depth.

Baby Poop

As a new mom, I remember struggling a lot with baby poop.

What’s normal? That can’t be normal. Should I call my pediatrician? She has diaper rash again! Is that a yeast infection?

All of these questions troubled me and probably annoyed my daughter’s pediatrician. This section of Mama Natural Baby Care Course answers your most common questions about baby poop and plus extremely natural, effective ways for maintaining your baby’s bum

BUT, that’s not why the Baby Poop section is one of my faves.

If you’ve ever considered using cloth diapers you need to watch these lessons. The Mama Natural Baby Care Course offers the best cloth diaper tutorial. Before watching her tutorial, I thought cloth diapering was complicated, can be messy, and expensive. Her tutorial made the whole process easy.

Genevieve explains the differences between each type of cloth diaper, how to clean and maintain your diapers, how much you’ll need, methods for successfully guarding your baby’s poop and more.

Not interested in cloth diapers? No big. I felt that her explanation of disposable diapers was great as well. I learned lots of cool new tricks, like the best disposable diapers to buy and how to avoid blowouts.

Baby Care

Newborn Care Class - Elisa Song (1)
Elisa Song (board-certified holistic pediatrician) teaches most of the Baby Care segments

This is the heart of the course, right here. How to take care of your little baby.

The Baby Care section covers key topics such as grooming, baby massages, natural solutions for common baby ailments, and dealing with your baby’s first (and second, and third…) illnesses. The majority of this section is taught by pediatrician Elisa Song. I love that her recommendations are not only holistic and natural-oriented, but based in science and professional experience.

The grooming, baby massage, and baby illness lessons are great for new and experienced moms. As a second-time mom, I learned so much that I wished I had known from my first. I truly feel that watching these lessons will make you feel confident that you can take care of your baby’s most basic needs.

Having said that, I would pay special attention to (and probably take notes on) the baby ailments lesson. This is a LONG lesson, almost 45 minutes long, that is dedicated to overcoming your baby’s common problems with natural remedies.

This section is essential for any natural-minded mom, because there is a good chance that you will deal with many of these ailments. Infant reflux, gas, constipation, heat rash, cradle cap, eczema, avoiding flat head syndrome, managing colic

As you can see, there’s a lot of information stuffed in the section. I would watch watch this section from start to finish and reference it regularly as these issues arise during your baby’s first year of life.

Infant Safety

Mama Natural Baby Care Course -Infant CPR
Infant CPR Tutorial

While the Mama Natural Baby Care Course isn’t a substitution for a certified infant CPR course, it can help you feel much more confident in an emergency situation.

This section is taught by Firefighter Tim. He explains what to do if your baby chokes, becomes unresponsive at any point, or needs CPR administered. The tutorial is very thorough and easy to follow.

They also go over infant car seat safety. As a new parent, figuring out how to work a baby car seat can seem daunting. Once again, even as a second-time mom, I learned so much from this section.

It teaches the differences between a convertible and infant car seat, the tricky, built-in safety features of a car seat that you’d probably never discover on your own, how to properly tighten and secure a car seat with the locking clip or standard seat beat, and how to ensure that your baby is completely secure.

Who This Course is For

This course primarily caters to new moms. Crunchy moms will definitely LOVE this course, but I hesitate to box it in because I feel that non-crunchy moms would love it too.

I would also recommend it to experienced moms. Once again, I’m coming up on my second child as I’m writing this review. While the class does go over a lot information that experienced moms would (hopefully) already know, there is still a lot of natural-based tips that make it worthwhile.

Is it Worth It: Concluding My Mama Natural Baby Care Course Review

Newborn Care Course - Mama Natural Baby Care Course Review

1000% yes. Whether you’re a crunchy or silky mom, this course will save you hours of endless googling and reading. I honestly can’t think of a topic that Genevieve didn’t cover that should have been covered.

Plus, with its current introductory price, this course is actually cheaper than some in-person baby care courses I’ve seen.

The only real disappointment I had was that it didn’t come with a written guide. At this price point, that expectation certainly isn’t justifiable, but the course contained so much information that I felt overwhelmed.

If you’re a note-taker like me and this is one of your concerns, keep in mind that each lesson does have a helpful table of contents and time markers that allow you to hop around from topic to topic. From here, you can take notes. It’s worth it.

I hope my Mama Natural Baby Care Course review was helpful! If you’d like to take the plunge and sign up for the course, just click the link below. As I’m writing this review, it is still priced low for that Early Bird Special.
