10 Fun Things to Do For Baby’s First Halloween

Congratulations, you made it to baby’s first Halloween! Are you ready to start making some memories?

My daughters and I are avid trick-or-treaters. That is, they work their magic on the neighbors and I reap the benefits of their efforts. When they were younger though, we tried a ton of Halloween-related activities to pass the time. Some of which have become a family tradition! If you’re looking for fun things to do for your baby’s first Halloween, I hope these ideas spark some of your own adventures.

1 Photo Mini Session

We love to capture our babies’ first moments, don’t we? Most of the time, that’s with our phone. Sometimes though, it’s fun to take professional photos that we can frame and cherish forever.

But they’re so expensive…well, not always.

Mama, let me introduce you to the wonderful world of mini-sessions.

Mini-sessions are 15-30 minute sessions with a professional photographer. Usually, a local photographer will announce these events on their social media page and book several clients back-to-back. Typically, you’ll have less flexibility with outfit changes and posing, but in the end you’ll receive beautiful, professional photos for between $50-$100.

Fall/Halloween-themed mini sessions are especially popular.

Try searching “<Your City> Halloween Mini-Sessions” on Facebook. You can also join a local moms Facebook group and asking there.

2 Hay Rides

Both of my babies loved hayrides. Something about the texture of straw and bumping across the ground completely charmed them.

Do you have a local farm nearby? Check out their website to see if they offer hayrides! Large nurseries (the gardening kind) also offer hayrides sometimes.

You can also search Facebook events for “Fall Festivals.”

3 Halloween Craft

You can make creative memories without the spooky!

Here’s a few to get you started.

Are you detecting a theme with these crafts? I like the ones that you can keep forever and ever and ever! Your baby’s first Halloween is so precious and it’s important to capture those memories forever.

4 Family Halloween Costume

Family Halloween Costume

This is one of my faves! As you can see in the picture above, my daughter was dressed as a latte and I, a barista. Unfortunately, that night no one could tell what we were wearing because it was too frigid and we had to wear coats.

But still!

Check out Amazon for cute matching costumes. You can also  make up your own.

For example:

  • Animal Pairs (for example, Mommy Lion and Baby Lion)
  • DC Superheroes
  • The Incredibles
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Harry Potter
  • Fruit
  • Addams Family

5 Halloween Parade

New to parenthood and wondering what the heck a Halloween Parade is? Only the cutest thing EVER! Basically, you get your baby all dressed up, gather with your neighbors at a certain meeting spot, and take a walk through a pre-determined route. Usually, there’s events before and after.

You can vote for your favorite costume in a costume pageant, complete crafts, and grab some goodie bags. After the parade, the host will usually announce the winner of the pageant and hand out the prizes.

6 Trunk or Treat

We’ve all heard the horror stories about nasty things people sneak into candies during trick or treats. If this is giving you reservations, try a Trunk or Treat. Many, many churches host these events. Even without the candy, they’re usually pretty fun to attend because of the creative trunk displays.

Non-religious affiliations sometimes support trunk or treats as well–for example, kids entertainment venues, childcares, or sometimes even pediatricians.

7 Halloween Carnival

We have a toooooooon of Halloween/Fall festivals in our area. Usually, a festival is hosted at the fairgrounds or a local farm, and includes pony rides, hay rides, corn mazes, pumpkin picking/decorating, and other random games.

Carnivals take it a step further. A carnival might include vendors and rides.

8 Visit the Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin Patch (1)

There’s nothing wrong with grabbing your pumpkin at Wal-Mart (and if you’re extra lazy like me, you’ll order through Wal-Mart Pick-Up). However, if you have the time and budget, visiting the pumpkin patch creates the cutest memories!

Here’s why–first of all, most pumpkin patches have these adorable photo stations set up (as seen above). Secondly, there’s an experience that you feel when you go around and select “the one.” Your baby can touch and feel and taste (gum) that pumpkin. Finally, you’re supporting your local farmers! They work HARD. These pumpkin patches give them a nice boost in income.

9 Reading Hour at the Library

My girls have visited the library since they were born. Reading hour is the best hour! Although, thankfully, usually it’s more like “Reading 15 Minutes.”

Usually, the librarian will start out with a silly song to prime the older kids, followed by a wholesome spooky tale. Complete with funny voices and hand gestures.

10 Hand Out Candy Together

First Halloween (1)
My little one, days after she was born, was too young to go Trick-or-Treating

Your little one may have zero interest in trick-or-treating right now, but that doesn’t mean they can’t help spread the sugar high!

Handing out candy (or healthy snack bags) helps you get to know your neighbors, offers a unique sensory experience for baby, and gives you plenty of chances to show off your little one’s cute costume.

Plus, touring kids love babies! Especially in costume!
