Finding fantastic maternity outfits isn’t always easy. While popular retailers are finally rising to the occasion, many lines are overpriced or styled…weird. 

In the past, I’ve shopped at Amazon or discount retailers like Ross or Marshall’s. While it absolutely is possible to find great maternity outfits at these locations, it kind of feels like the luck of the draw. 

Now expecting our second child, I have a better idea of what I’m looking for in maternity clothes. Last round, I bought some great-looking clothes that were atrociously expensive and some frumpy clothes for a great price. This time, I want it all and then some.

I’m looking for function, affordability, and style. AND, since I plan on breastfeeding, I want these purchases to evolve into nursing shirts as well. 

If you’re like me and want it all, I think you’re going to love this new brand I’ve been introduced to: Undercover Mama. I am thoroughly impressed with their line of maternity/nursing hybrids as well as their unique, one-handed clip design. 

In this post, I’ll share my experience so you can tell if Undercover Mama is the solution you’ve been searching for.

Pros and Cons: Undercover Mama Review  At-a-Glance

What is Undercover Mama?

Undercover Mama is a start-up founded by mom, for moms. The co-owners, Elena and Elisa know a thing or two about maternity wear. In fact, they have 12 kids between the 2 of them.

After personally struggling with nursing tops, they created their own line of clothing featuring an ingenious one-handed clip design.

How It Works

If you’ve ever used nursing tops before, you know that generally you have two clasps to unsnap (for most tops, anyway). This can be a bear when you’re holding your baby at the same time!

Undercover Mama tops hook directly onto your nursing bra. They are equipped with two different clasps: A traditional hook (which you can link with a regular bra or nursing bra), and a rubber loop (my preferred choice for nursing bras).

When you’re ready to nurse, you simply unclasp your bra and the Undercover Mama top pulls down in the same movement.

It’s so convenient!

Design and Comfort

Style

Let’s talk style. Undercover Mama is totally affordable (ranging from $15-30). But how does it look?

Personally, I love the style. The top that I ordered accentuates my curves (even with the bump!) without looking too tight or frumpy. The colors and patterns available for the tops are perfectly in season as well.

I do have one complaint: there aren’t a ton of styles and colors available (YET!). Obviously, this wasn’t a make or break deal for me, but I’d love to see more in the future!

Sizing

Their sizing for the tops was actually spot on. I measured out to be a medium and it fits with plenty of room to grow.

If you plan on buying one of their tanks, Undercover Mama does suggest sizing up. I ordered a large. While it does fit, it is snug and I don’t expect it to feel comfortable as my bump grows.

I would use your discretion here based on how you plan on using the clothes. If you’re like me and plan on using the shirts throughout your pregnancy and nursing time, I would consider going two sizes up. If you’re strictly looking for a nursing tank, you should be find with one size up.

One last note on the tank: it’s definitely not opaque (at least mine wasn’t.) Meaning, you may want to wear a top over the tank unless it’s very loose on you.

Comfort

Oh, these shirts are deliciously soft. You will love how they feel on your skin.

The fabric is also very lightweight, which if you’ve had nursing tops before, you know is a must. If you’re a new mom, understand that there is usually an added flap material around your breasts. This extra material, combined with your nursing bra, can produce a lot of sweat.

That is not a problem with my Undercover Mama top. It’s super light and feels great.

Undercover Mama Care

Between leaks and sweating, chances are, you’ll be washing these shirts fairly often. So, how’s the care? Pretty straight forward, honestly.

You can machine wash these tops on cold and dry on low. The tanks are fairly thin though so you will be required to dry on a flat surface.

I’ve only had these tops for about a month, so I’ll update in after a few more washes to report how they’ve held up.

The Undercover Mama Review: Is it Worth it?

I had a great experience with Undercover Mama.

Amazon offers a huge selection but the quality is kind of iffy. Meanwhile, maternity shops like Motherhood Maternity offer  a huge selection of high-quality shirts, but at a steep price. 

The functionality is just ingenious and the price is pretty unbeatable. I also love that the company has a 30 day, worry-free return policy that allows customers to purchase with confidence.

So, yes! Try them out. I think you’re going to be very pleased!
