There’s no doubt, Amazon has transformed the way we shop. Now you don’t have to worry about dragging your wailing kids through the mall or getting stampeded by competing shoppers. ALL of your Black Friday shopping can be done from the convenience of your home.
At least, that’s what my husband and I discovered a couple years ago. At this point, we were the proud new parents of a 3 month old. We couldn’t imagine going out to dinner for longer than an hour, let alone spending all day shopping. So, we changed the game. We learned how to make the best of our favorite online retailer: Amazon.
When you shop Amazon, you have the potential to save MASSIVELY. Or, you could easily lose all of your hard-earned money on items you don’t even need.
This post will help steer you maximize your savings during Amazon’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday events. I’ll teach you what deals to look for, how to organize and plan so you don’t miss out on the good ones, and how you can even earn money from your purchases.

About Amazon Black Friday Deals
Time is money during Amazon’s Black Friday event.
Black Friday deals on Amazon go much quicker than brick and mortar locations. At a retailer, you might wait in line for five hours and compete with 30-40 people for the same item. On Amazon, you’re competing with literally thousands. So, prioritizing your clicks is a must. Below I’ll explain the different deals Amazon has so you’ll know which ones you’ll need to focus on.
Spotlight, Lightning Deals and Sales
Amazon has daily, spotlight, and lightning deals on Black Friday.
Spotlight Deals are either steeply discounted brand items or Black Friday-specific items that are offered throughout the day. Most of these items are stocked pretty well, but if you see something that makes you say, “OMG, that’s a great deal!”, chances are everyone else is going to go for it too.
ANYTHING Disney, electronic, must-have baby gear (like strollers, car seats, bottles, etc.) will go in a snap. Don’t hesitate. If its on your list, grab it.
Lightning deals are flash sales. Limited time, biggest discount. The sales usually last for a couple hours, but most of the good deals sell out before they expire.
If you don’t want to miss any of these sales, you need to research the day before with the Amazon app and “watch” your favorite deals.
We’ll get to that in just a minute.
How to Save More Money During Amazon’s Black Friday Event
1 Make a List and Stick to It
Okay, this might seem a little basic, but trust me, it’s easy to deviate in the moment. Amazon tends to surprise customers with their Black Friday items until the day before or on Black Friday.
So, when the sales start, you’re going to see a lot of good deals that you probably won’t be prepared for. Deals that you probably didn’t even know you “needed.” Before you know it, all that money you would have “saved” is completely spent.
Do not fall into the retail trap!
Even if you’re exclusively shopping at Amazon, make sure you write down only the things you need. This will reduce the temptation to overshop.
If you have some gray area items (e.g., you’ve been thinking about buying a new baby swing but you’d only do it if the price is right), that’s totally okay. Just make sure you jot those items in too so that you can budget them in.
If you’re not much of a planner, I have the PERFECT tool to help you! I’m offering a FREE Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Printable. Usually, this printable is part of my Baby on a Budget program, but I’m offering it to new subscribers as well.
This planner will help you track all of your necessary purchases…which ends up saving time and money!
2 Sign up for Amazon Prime
Many of the deals are for Prime Members ONLY.
If you’re on the fence about Amazon Prime, let me tell you that it has literally changed my life. I use it to buy diapers (at very steep discounts), most of my daughter’s toys (and my husband’s gifts), most household goods, and 99% of my electronics. I think you’ll really like it. The membership pays for itself.
Having said that, you can sign up for free with this 30 Day Trial and still have access to all of the member-exclusive deals Black Friday (you can cancel at any time).
Here’s just a few benefits of Amazon Prime:
- Prime-Exclusive pricing
- Free Returns on qualified purchases
- Free unlimited 2-day shipping and Same Day Shipping (depending on the item)
- Prime Video (Oodles of free movies)
- Amazon Kindle

3 Use the “Watch” Feature on the Amazon App
Easy hack to find the best Black Friday deals on Amazon:
Download the Amazon app, open the app to “Today’s Deals” and then “Upcoming”. Filter to the departments you’re interested in.
(As I’m writing this, Amazon also has a HoliDeals tab that has some on fire deals as well).
If you click “Watch This Deal” the app will notify you when the deal goes live. This will ensure that you’ll be able to snag your items right when the sale starts.
4 Use Your Amazon Prime Store Card for 0% Interest Financing and Cashback
Most of the time, I tend to stay away from credit cards, however, I do make an exception for Black Friday. Many merchants offer additional cashback for online retail purchases.
If you feel comfortable putting your purchases on a credit card, check out your bank’s monthly cashback deals. For example, Chase Credit and Discover often have extra 5% on retail locations for November. You can also use Amazon’s credit card.
Amazon Rewards VISA offers:
- 5% cashback on all Whole Foods Market purchases
- 2% on restaurants, gas stations, and some retailers
- 1% on everything else.
5 Double-Dip with Ibotta and Rakuten Ebates
If you’re not using Rakuten or Ibotta to shop on Amazon you are potentially missing out on up to 3.5% cashback!
Rakuten (formerly Ebates) is an rebates app that allows you to earn cashback on all qualifying purchases. These apps are completely free to use and require literally no credit.
Basically, Rakuten is an affiliate for Amazon. When you log into their app and purchase a qualifying item using their link, Rakuten receives a commission (which you’re not charged for). Then, Rakuten gives you a small piece of that commission in the form of cashback.
Rakuten is so easy to use, too. If you make your purchases using the Amazon app, you just have to enter the Rakuten app first and it’ll redirect you. Or, if you prefer to use the desktop, you can download the Rakuten Chrome add-on, which notifies you if it detects a deal.
To use Ibotta in-store, you simply scan in your receipts for qualifying purchases.
Having said that, Ibotta is very, very similar to Rakuten when you’re shopping online. Like Rakuten, you simply log into the app to check out what items qualify for cashback. If you see something, you just click the link and you’re redirected to the Amazon app. Then you just purchase your items per usual.
