The Cocoon Cam Plus Review: One Mom’s Unbiased and Honest Experience

Moving into SIDS Awareness Month, more and more parents attempt to provide a safe sleeping environment for their little ones. Regardless, you can follow every SIDS guideline in the book and still fear that your baby’s nap could be his last one. As a new mom,  I was terrified of this silent killer. I compulsively watched my baby monitor, scrutinizing the rise and fall of my daughter’s chest.

That’s why baby breathing monitors are such a godsend. This technology provides the peace of mind you need to put your phone down and finally get some rest.

If you’ve been searching anxiously for a reliable baby breathing monitor, I’m so glad you’re here. In my Cocoon Cam Plus Review, I’ll share my complete and honest experience with this product. The point is to give you a realistic view of this camera’s capabilities, benefits, and drawbacks so you can decide if its the best baby breathing monitor for you.

What is the Cocoon Cam Plus?

Cocoon Cam Plus Front

The Cocoon Cam Plus is the latest breathing and sound monitoring baby camera  by Cocoon Cam.

Unlike other baby breathing monitors, this camera relies on computer vision technology to track your baby’s breath, rather than invasive wearables. The camera uses motion sensing software to track your baby’s location and determine your baby’s breath rate by analyzing tiny movements around her chest and head.

About Cocoon Cam

After Cocoon Cam contacted me, I dug into the company’s background. The camera was created by Siva and Pavan, entrepreneurs that built the company from scratch in Silicon Valley. The fact that the Cocoon Cam company is a start-up said two things to me: 1. The developers will care about their customer’s experience. (I mean, their entire reputation is on the line!) And 2: The Cocoon Cam will continue to improve because the company is motivated and passionate about their product.

Using a baby breathing monitor is a big deal and ensuring its reliability and customer service base is an absolute must!

My Favorite Cocoon Cam Plus Features

Breathing Graph –Aside from the Cocoon Cam’s overall breathing, sound, and motion monitoring, the breathing graph is my favorite feature. Cocoon Cam’s breathing graph gives you a visual representation of your child’s breathing patterns. With this feature you don’t have to just trust that the camera is monitoring your baby’s breathing.

Notifications- My second favorite feature of the Cocoon Cam. In this menu, you can choose to receive notifications if your baby stops breathing, begins crying, falls asleep, wakes up, or when a “Swaddle Story” is completed. You can also assign individual tones to each notification.

Activity Log- I think new moms will appreciate the activity log. It’s a visual log of your baby’s main events throughout the day, such as when your baby falls asleep, wakes up, and starts crying. An extremely useful feature for tired new mom’s that can’t even remember their first name, let alone keep track of their baby’s sleep schedule!

Wireless Connection- You can choose to set the camera up wirelessly or with an ethernet cable. Once the Cocoon Cam has connected with your network, your smartphone or tablet serves as your baby monitor

My Honest Experience with the Cocoon Cam Plus

Cocoon Cam Setup

Setup and Installation of the Cocoon Cam

I promised to share my negative and positive experiences with the Cocoon Cam Plus…so, let’s start with the negative.

There are two main components of setting up your Cocoon Cam: connecting the camera to your network and mounting the device appropriately over your baby’s crib. Unfortunately, I had hiccups with both.

Connecting the Cocoon Cam to WiFi

The Cocoon Cam must run on a 2.4GHz network and the name of the network can’t contain any special characters. My camera connected to the internet easily and prompted me to begin the wireless setup. After typing in my password, I received an incorrect password error. After a few tries, I texted Cocoon Cam customer support.

Tech support was extremely responsive and resolved my issue within five minutes. Apparently, a symbol in my WiFi’s password was incompatible with Cocoon Cam software. They changed the password on my Cocoon Cam and we were good to go.

Mounting the Cocoon Cam

Cocoon Cam makes it very clear that the camera must be installed correctly in order for it to work. The camera must be mounted 3’ above the crib mattress, in the center of the crib (lengthwise), so that the camera can have a perfect birds-eye view of your baby.

After mounting it exactly as specified, I saw that the edges of the crib were out of sight. While the monitor does work correctly, there are times that my daughter’s face is out of view, which I’m sure affects the breathing monitoring to some extent. This could be attributed to user error, but just prepare to deviate from the recommended mounting height by an inch or two, depending on the size of your crib.

(Note: I would also recommend purchasing some sort of cable cover at some point. When your baby becomes mobile, he may become very curious about those cables hanging tantalizingly above his head.)

Breathing, Motion, and Sound Monitoring

Before testing the camera, I had three concerns about the breathing and sound monitoring that I hoped to verify for this Cocoon Cam Plus review:

  • Does the Cocoon Cam breathing monitoring feature actually work?
  • Am I going to get a bunch of false alarms?
  • Does the notifications feature work and if so, can I use it in the background?

Cocoon Cam Breathing Monitor

Does the Cocoon Cam Breathing Monitoring Work?

Computer vision technology tracks your baby’s location and then determines your baby’s breathing by monitoring the motion around her chest and head. For those of you with preemies or sensitive babies that can’t stand any wearables, this wireless technology is ingenius.

But does it work?

Quick answer: I think so. The breathing graph was extremely consistent and seemed to track her movements accurately. If she shifted around (thus breaking the breathing graph), it tracked her movement and resumed pretty quickly.

As for the accuracy of the device, I can’t say. Cocoon Cam does have some pretty impressive referrals. If you visit their website, you can see that their product was recently tested at the NICU of the  Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and performed very well.

False Alarms

I did NOT want a baby camera that sent me false alarm notifications throughout the night. I’m happy to report that during the entirety of my testing phase, I didn’t receive a single false alarm.

Cocoon Cam Notification Settings

Notifications

My previous baby monitor promised to deliver motion notifications and failed miserably. The end result was that I was solely dependent on the live feed or I relied on a secondary audio baby monitor.

For this test, I whipped out my traditional baby monitor, just to be compare.

The Cocoon Cam actually worked pretty consistently. It notified me when my baby woke up, began crying, fell asleep, or stopped breathing. I tried the notification system on the iOS and Android platforms; While I did notice some delay with my Galaxy, my iPad received notifications very quickly.

Bandwidth, Data, and Battery Usage

The reliance on your home’s network can be a disadvantage for WiFi-based cameras like the Cocoon Cam. Some cameras are notorious for eating up your home’s broadband and your cellphone’s battery life and data.

Overall, my experience with the Cocoon Cam was pretty good. I did not notice any lag issues (with the exception of the notification delay).

I was very impressed with the battery usage on my iPad. I was able to run the app in the background for a couple days before my iPad went dead.

However, the app drained my Galaxy’s battery quickly, even if run in the background.

Data usage was okay. On my Galaxy, I used a combination of WiFi and mobile data. For the 2 weeks I used the app, it drained an additional gigabyte of data.

Compared to my last WiFi baby monitor (3 gigabytes!), these results are actually impressive.

Picture and Sound Quality

Cocoon Cam Plus Picture Quality

The picture quality was pretty good.

The Cocoon Cam is equipped with a 720 HD lense. The focus on the lense is manual, but in the entire time I’ve used it, I only adjusted it once.

The fact that the picture wasn’t crystal clear didn’t bother me too much. However, I think the upcoming Cocoon Cam Clarity (equipped with a 1080p lense) will be a great feature for most consumers.

The sound quality wasn’t great.

My daughter’s baby blabber sounded muffled and distorted. I believe the camera is much more equipped to detect sound rather than replay it. I did enjoy that I could turn the microphone on and run it in the background, turning my phone into a audio baby monitor.
