Eliminating unnecessary toxins from your life is an admirable goal for 2020. There’s no better place to start than with your deodorant!
Reputable studies have shown that the active ingredients in antiperspirants, such as aluminum and parabens, can seriously imbalance your natural bacteria and may even cause a build-up of toxins under your skin.
The end result? Increased body odors and possible skin sensitivities.
For these exact reasons, I’ve always been interested in finding a natural deodorant. The problem is (as I’m sure you’re finding out), a lot of natural deodorants just don’t work.
Before Wild Root approached me about testing out their new product, I’ve tried Tom’s Natural Deodorants and a few Amazon brands without much success. I found these products to be inefficient odor-blockers and using them always led to uncomfortable situations. As in, I closed my arms and prayed no one would stand downwind of me…
My antiperspirant wasn’t much better. Over time, my sweat and odors increased, making it difficult to find a brand that actually worked.
Then I tried Wild Root and I just have to say…WOW.
Now, before we get into my Wild Root natural deodorant review, I want to let you know that my goal isn’t to sell you on a particular product. But I’m just going to tell you right now, I think you’re going to love it. I’ve been using Wild Root for just over a month and I can say, without hesitation, that I’m not going back to store-bought antiperspirants. No. Way.
I hope this review helps you decide whether or not you’d like to give them a try.

Why Use a Natural Deodorant?
Okay, before we really dive into the heart of this Wild Root review, I want to affirm why using a natural deodorant is an excellent choice.
As you know, antiperspirants use aluminum. Aluminum limits sweating and minimizes the amount of bacteria on the surface of your pits. All of this works together to reduce your BO. Having said that, aluminum also causes fluids to build up in your body and your pores to become clogged. When pores are clogged, bacteria build up as well, causing more pungent body odor over time.
Antiperspirants also contain chemicals of concern, such as parabens, triclosan, phthalates, and other fragrances. The evidence proving the negative effects of these chemicals is very limited and inconclusive. Having said that, if you’re anything like me, the idea of letting these chemicals plug your pores and absorb into your skin day after day just feels icky.
Natural Deodorants and Detoxing
When you stop using antiperspirants, your body might go into a detox phase. This is where your body expels those built up fluids, toxins, and bacteria. In other words, you’re going to sweat and stink for a few days.
Many natural deodorant newbies give up during these first few days because it feels like the deodorant doesn’t work.
Believe it or not, this phase is a positive thing. It means you’re getting rid of all that junk that’s been hiding beneath the surface. So, stick with it! According to Wild Root, your detox phase can last for 1-3 weeks, but most people experience 3-10 days.
Personally, my detox period was roughly 2-3 days. I noticed some increased sweating but, since I was using the Performance Line, the deodorant was able to mask most of the scent. That’s my experience, though. Yours could be totally different.
To survive this period, keep your natural deodorant handy and wipe your pits throughout the day. Drink lots of water and do some controlled sweating (taking a steam bath, going to a sauna, etc.) to flush out the toxins quicker.
What is Wild Root Natural Deodorant
Wild Root is a natural deodorant that makes use of natural bacteria-fighting- sweat-absorbing ingredients to provide the best odor-blocking experience for you.
Wild Root contains two product lines: Performance Line (which contains baking soda) and the Sensitive Line (without baking soda). From there, Wild Root offers five scents: Wildflower, Citrus Leaf, Tall Pine, Meadow, and Unscented.
From Simply Earth to Wild Root
Wild Root was founded by the Jenny Veldkamp, the co-founder of Simply Earth Essential Oils. Simply Earth is, hands down, my favorite essential oils company. In fact, part of my interest in Wild Root was because of my love for this company.
In case you’re new to Simply Earth, they offer 100% pure essential oils at a fraction of the cost of big essential oil companies. Needless to say, if you happen to use essential oils, you need to check them out.
Continuing with her mission to create a non-toxic lifestyle, Jenny founded Wild Root. So far, Wild Root’s quality, customer service, and products seem to be right in line with Simply Earth’s high standards.

Ingredients in Wild Root Natural Deodorants
Wild Root contains only all-natural ingredients, however, these ingredients differ based on what line you choose.
I actually tested both lines, and I recommend that if you’re a hardcore sweat-er or physically active, I would recommend the Performance Line. The Performance Line’s big, sweat-fighting active ingredient is baking soda.
The Sensitive Line contains all of the ingredients of the Performance Line except baking soda.
Let’s dig into the ingredients a little more.
Baking Soda
To be clear, unlike antiperspirant deodorants, baking soda does not “prevent” sweating. Because it is alkaline, it helps evaporates and absorb sweat, creating dryness. It also kills odor-causing bacteria, thereby fighting against BO.
Having said that, baking soda’s propensity to dry out your skin is a double-edged sword. Some people with skin sensitivities (such as eczema) can’t handle the strength of baking soda.
Essential Oils from Simply Earth
I’ve already gushed about Simply Earth and how I think they are the best essential oils company out there. The type of essential oils used in Wild Root actually makes a difference too. Some of these essential oils (such as clary sage, lemongrass, and ylang ylang) have powerful antibacterial properties.
Other Ingredients:
- Coconut Oil
- Arrowroot Powder
- Beeswax
- Tapioca Starch
- Mango Butter
- Zinc Ricolenate

How Does Wild Root Perform?
Overall Performance
Before using Wild Root I was switching between 3 different brands of antiperspirant. With my increased physical activity, these deodorants simply were not adequately blocking my scent or my sweat. By the time I received the Wild Root deodorant, I had finally found an antiperspirant that worked relatively well, but I needed to reapply at least once a day.
After using Wild Root for a month now, my overall sweating has dramatically reduced.
The thing is, antiperspirants put you in a vicious cycle. You sweat, so you apply more deodorant. The deodorant clogs up your pores, messes with your microbial balance, increasing your sweat and your BO over time. For me, Wild Root broke that cycle.
I started off using the Performance Line. While I did notice an increase in sweat for the first 2-3 days, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the deodorant masked the odors. In fact, after my detox period ended, I would say that the Performance Line worked as well, if not better, than my antiperspirant.
Next, I tried out Meadow from the Sensitive Line. The Sensitive Line held up well with little activity, but I did notice more sweat and odors when I worked out or after being in a warm room for a while. The Sensitive Line does mask the odors well ( I would rate it up to par with Tom’s), but it didn’t offer the type of protection that the Performance Line did.
Which Wild Root Line is Best For Me?
If you’re active, breastfeeding, pregnant, or have the tendency to sweat like a body builder like me, definitely go with the Performance Line. I did not experience and skin irritations and it held up well for all of my gym excursions.
If you do have sensitive skin or you’re allergic to baking soda, go with the Sensitive Line. I still enjoyed using it and it actually performed pretty well, you may just need to reapply midway through a hot day.
Scent
My favorite scent was the Wildflower, which uses lavender and ylang ylang essential oils. My second favorite is the Citrus Leaf. It smells so fresh and revitalizing, it actually makes you feel like your armpits are clean. The Meadow scent was least favorite, simply because I don’t like lemongrass, but overall it gave off a pleasant odor.
Application
The texture of each deodorant varies somewhat.
I first received a sample of the Wildflower deodorant in Simply Earth’s December recipe box. At first, the sample was rigid and a little difficult to apply. However, after a couple applications, it seemed to soften up quite a bit. The other two full-sized deodorants were perfectly normal and applied very easily. I actually like the texture of the deodorant quite a bit. Some deodorant has the tendency to take on either a gel-y or powder-y feel, but this applies just right.
Other Considerations
Let’s talk about the thing that no woman wants to think about: the little white particles under your armpits. It’s every black shirt’s enemy!
I’m happy to report that I did not notice any white substance staining my shirt. Sometimes I notice a darker stain (I’m assuming the coconut oil) but it was nothing my washing machine couldn’t handle.
SHORT ON TIME? PIN IT!
