I don’t know about you, but I’ve been cleaning a lot lately. With a spouse that’s working through the lockdown, it’s important to protect my home from any nasty germs he might bring home. The trouble is, I’m pregnant! As a mom of a toddler, I try to use natural products when I can, but now that I’m pregnant, it’s an absolute-must.
My favorite ingredient for these cleaning products are essential oils. Time and time again, essential oils have proven to fight against germs, detoxify the air and surfaces, and even improve your mood. Isn’t that much better than using questionable chemicals?
How about you? Have you been wanting to give DIY natural cleaners a try? With traditional cleaning products flying off the shelves, now is the perfect time to detox your home!
If you’re new to making DIY cleaning products with essential oils (or you’ve already experienced the essential oil sticker shock), don’t fret. I’m about to help you get started. My favorite essential oils company, Simply Earth, rolled out a recipe box that includes all of the ingredients you’ll need to create effective, germ-killing cleaning solutions, plus the recipes you need to do it.

Who is Simply Earth and Why I’m Love Them
This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase from one of the links I will make a small commission at no charge to you. Blunders in Babyland does not diagnose, treat, or give out any professional advice for any medical conditions.
I’m going to tell you a secret: if you’re a hardcore essential oils user and you’re not buying from Simply Earth, you’re probably overpaying.
Simply Earth is a family-owned company based in Waldo, Wisconsin. They work directly with ethical farmers to purchase the absolute best plants they can find, ship these plants back to the US, and create 100% pure oils in their own commercial kitchen. Then, they sell these essential oils directly from their website.
This unique process dramatically cuts down the cost of goods. But here’s the best part: guess who they pass along these savings to?
That’s right! Their customers!
At Simply Earth, you can buy 100% pure Frankincense for under $20 (which is over 3x cheaper than the competition). They love providing their customers with a great product without compromising on quality.
There are a few other things I love about this company as well: they donate 13% of their profits to nonprofit organizations fighting against human trafficking, the personal touches they make to every handpacked recipe box, and the way they stuff as much value into their boxes as they possibly can.
I’m being completely serious when I say, this is the ONLY essential oils company I use.

What’s a Recipe Box?
Hands down, Simply Earth’s most popular product is their recipe box. While you’re able to buy each of their oils ala carte, you’ll find the best savings when you subscribe to their monthly recipe box. For $39, you’ll get 4 essential oils, 6 essential oil recipes, and 2-3 bonus goodies (plus a full bonus box if you’re a new customer).
Simply Earth wants to help their customers detoxify their home, one DIY essential oil solution at a time. To do this, they send out a recipe box each month with a different theme.
As a customer for over 6 months, I can personally attest to the fact that Simply Earth’s themes are always relevant. Last month’s theme (during the March winter-lull) theme was “Boosting Your Mood.”
This month, during the height of the pandemic, the theme is “Home Detox.” Since every house in America is cleaning like crazy right now, I can’t think of a better theme.
What’s Included in The Simply Earth April Box (2020)
The recipes and ingredients in the Simply Earth April Box are designed to help you detox your home by creating all-natural DIY cleaning products. Whether you buy Simply Earth or not, pay attention to these oils. You’ll want to have them in your pantry!
Lemongrass Essential Oil
If you’ve been a DIYer for a while, you’ve probably heard about lemongrass’s powerful insect repellent properties. It’s practically an American tradition to buy a lemongrass planter for your patio for the summer!
Lemongrass essential oil contains the same properties, but highly concentrated. In fact, one study suggested that lemongrass, combined with olive oil, can provide 98% protection against mosquitoes for hours! All without the sketchy chemicals.
Not only that, lemongrass boasts antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Peppermint Essential Oil
If you’re going to use essential oils regularly, you need peppermint in your house. It’s an antiseptic, insect repellant, natural deodorizer and, if you’re experiencing cold symptoms, a natural expectorant (one component in peppermint, menthol, is actually used in cough drops).
Plus, it’s an excellent mood booster!
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Like peppermint, tea tree oil should be a staple essential oil in your household. It is a powerhouse.
When used topically or diffused, you can receive the benefits of Terpinen-4-ol–a powerful agent that helps your body fight bacteria. Studies have determined that it can also protect against viruses as well, such as s. pneumoniae and H. influenzae.(The Starter Box, which also includes tea tree oil actually contains a hand sanitizer recipe.)
Clean & Fresh Blend
I can’t describe to you how fresh this blend smells. If you’ve ever used Pine-Sol to scrub your floors, Clean & Fresh Blend kind of smells like that, but with a hint of citrus. It’s blend of Fir Needle, Neroli, Lemon, & Grapefruit. Neroli, a very rare, very expensive essential oil, smells amazing. It’s considered a premium oil to use for stress and anxiety relief.
Lemon and Fir Needle contain antibacterial, antifungal, and detoxifying properties.
Grapefruit contains anti-carcinogenic properties as well and has been shown to help fight upper respiratory infections. Basically, this is a good blend to have in your house right now.
The Simply Earth’s April 2020 recipe box also includes a few bonuses to help you make your DIY cleaning products, such as a travel-sized spray bottle and soap bottle, and a grout brush.
The Bonus Box
As if all of this wasn’t enough, when you subscribe to Simply Earth for the first time, you also receive a BONUS BOX. The bonus box contains everything you need to mix and store your containers for the next 6 months (unless you go crazy).
I’ve been a customer of Simply Earth for 6 months and just received my second free bonus box (they send one out at every 6th order) and I still haven’t used all of the ingredients from the first.
Here’s what the bonus box includes:
- 6 10ml roll-on amber glass bottles
- 6 5ml amber glass bottles
- 4oz carrier almond oil
- 2oz beeswax
- 12oz coconut oil (solid)
- 4oz carrier fractionated coconut oil
I love that Simply Earth sends this box to their customers. Not only is it a great deal, but it really shows their commitment to helping their customers detox their home.
Simply Earth April Box 2020 Recipes: How to Create DIY Natural Cleaning Solutions with Essential Oils
Now that you have these amazing essential oils to help you fight bacteria and viruses, how do you create the DIY natural cleaning products I told you about?
Finding legit essential oils recipes on the internet is tough. It’s hard to tell exactly what the concentration of the mixtures should be. Thankfully, Simply Earth has included a few recipes (created by a legitimate essential oil expert) to help you get started.
Here’s the recipes included in the box:
- Gunk Remover
- Beeswax Furniture Polisher
- Happy Home Diffuser Blend
- Grout Scrub
- Work It Roll On
- Shine Spray
Shine Spray
I’m not going to lie, my table has seen better days. With a cooped-up toddler, I’m looking for very creative solutions to survive each day. Sometimes that entails homemade slime, sometimes it’s letting my toddler cover my table in a thousand Frozen II stickers. Whatever keeps her busy.
Whatever the activity, my table receives the brunt of the damage. I partnered the gunk remover with the shine spray to give my table a desperately-deserved cleaning.
The shine spray includes white vinegar and the Clean & Fresh blend. It works great on glass and stainless steel especially. You can use it on wooden tables like I did, but I recommend that you follow up with the Beewax Furniture Polisher.
Grout Scrub
Cleaning grout is always kind of a doozy. First, you have to find a cleaner that actually removes the stain and debris. Not only that, you have to find one that doesn’t choke you from the chemicals wafting into the air.
This grout scrub is all-natural, gets the job done, and it smells great. It’s a very simple recipe too, just white vinegar and the Clean & Fresh Blend, followed up with equal parts baking soda.
Gunk Remover
I love the name of this recipe, “gunk” remover. There is no better way to describe the build-up on my tables, walls, and shower from taking care of a toddler! As you can see in the (embarrassing) picture above, I had some sticker residue on my table. If you’re a mom, you know how difficult this can be to remove. It came right off with the gunk remover!
This is also a simple recipe, just lemongrass essential oil and fractionated coconut oil. Once again, you may want to follow up with the Beewax Furniture Polisher or the Shine Spray.

Once you’re a subscriber, you can also refer your friends with your own unique voucher code. When your friend buys, you’ll receive your next box 50% off. Pretty cool, right?
Just remember, while these recipe boxes are technically a subscription service, you can cancel or pause whenever you’d like. So, if next month’s box doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. You can just pause and pick up next month.
As a subscriber, you’ll receive lots of other cool benefits, such as access to exclusive recipes and Simply Earth’s Essential Oil Hero basics course.
What if This Box is Sold Out?
The recipe boxes tend to sell out by the middle of the month, third week at the latest. I have a theory that, because of the current pandemic we’re facing, this box will sell out much more quickly than usual. If the Simply Earth April Box has sold out, you can still buy these oils ala carte for a little extra cost.
Having said that, if you loved the oils in this box, I would consider looking at the Starter Box. It contains the peppermint and lemon, plus frankincense and Sleepy Blend, which is excellent for treating insomnia and anxiety. Frankincense, like grapefruit, is a great oil for treating upper respiratory infections.
